A graduate of the Hanoi University of Fine Arts, he was known for his restrained, pared-down style characterised by simple lines, muted colour palettes, and sparse compositions that emphasised form and space. His works often depicted everyday objects, rural landscapes, and architectural elements, rendered in a way that reflected both traditional Vietnamese aesthetics and modernist influences. Alongside his painting, he was active in Vietnam’s contemporary art scene as a curator and cultural organiser, contributing to the promotion of modern Vietnamese art at home and abroad.

(Photographed in September 2025)

Gouache on paper laid on board
60 x 60 cm (visible), 62 x 62 x 2 cm (framed)
Condition: Good, with two spots of paper loss on the lower right corner.

-

Christine Mak's (Singaporean, b. 1957) artistic style blends traditional compositions and forms of Chinese painting with Western techniques, especially inspired by the works of Joan Miro and Jackson Pollock.

Mak trained in Western painting at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (1976-1978) and in Chinese brush painting under Chao Shao-An, a master of the Lingnan (岭南) style (1979 to 1982).

Mak has received accolades at the Ministry of Communications and Information Art Competition (1987, 1989 and 1990), the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards (1995), the IBM Art Award (1988 and 1989) and the UOB Painting of the Year (1996).

(Photographed in October 2025)

Oil on canvas
73 x 91 cm
Condition: Good

-

Usami Kunonori (Japanese, 1929-2014) was born in the Nakano-ward of Tokyo.
