Born in Kyoto to painter parents, he studied ceramics at the Kanazawa College of Art and Craft before earning an MFA from Clemson University in the United States. His practice is influenced by Japanese traditions including Jōmon pottery, as well as contemporary visual culture such as manga and graffiti.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIwamura’s work explores the relationship between objects, people, and the spaces they inhabit, drawing particularly on the Japanese concept of Ma, which considers intervals, distance, and the space between things. His recognisable ceramic figures combine simplified, sculptural forms with expressive surface markings, creating a dialogue between ancient Japanese influences and contemporary aesthetics.
