His paintings feature recognisable faces, characters and objects, but these are often transformed rather than directly represented. Drawing partly from his early involvement in graffiti art, Lee uses imagery to explore personal thoughts, emotions and observations of the human condition.

Lee considers himself primarily a colourist, placing particular emphasis on colour, form, tone and the intuitive application of paint. He graduated from the Queensland College of Art in 1997 and has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally. He was a finalist for the Archibald Prize in 2012, and his work is held in collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Artbank and the University of Queensland Art Collection.

(Photographed in April 2021)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0889/4159/2941/files/RhysLee_Performanceexhaust_2020_132x113cm.jpg?v=1791281623
