This piece catches the river at its most crowded: boats packed hull to hull, masts and rigging crosshatching the sky, shophouses and godowns stacked up behind, the whole scene pressed dense with activity. It is the river in the middle of its own growth: chaotic, commercial, worked from bank to bank, a waterway we no longer see.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn the batik, the bustle is reduced to a web of fine dark lines and pooled dye, the crackle of the wax running through it like the noise of the place made visible.
