We bought these two paintings in 1994 by Gog Sin Hooi (b. 1933, Guangdong China — d. 1994, Singapore), depicting a mama shop (a small owner-operated convenience or provision shop) in Singapore. It reminded us of disappearing scenes of a bygone era, which I fondly recall growing up with, as my father himself ran a provision stall. With our children growing up in a vastly different Singapore, we wanted to preserve some scenes that were dear and precious to us.

Both paintings hung in our family home for 30 years. We are downsizing and hence looking to re-home the paintings to new homes that would appreciate them.

Gog was one of Singapore’s pioneer watercolour painters. He was known for his transparent watercolour depictions of Singapore street scenes. Transparent watercolour is a technique that employs thin washes to allow the whiteness of the paper to shine through, giving the subject depicted a clear luminosity. Gog was a strong promoter and supporter of the watercolour art form, and co-founded the Singapore Watercolour Society in 1969. His patrons include Singapore’s late former president Ong Teng Cheong.
