Kam Kee Yong (Singaporean, b. 1938), a 1984 Cultural Medallion recipient for Music, is a multifaceted talent renowned as both gifted violinist and a visual artist. As a violinist, he has composed several symphonies and garnered accolades for his performances. Alongside his musical pursuits, Kam’s passion for art flourished early in life, leading him to refine his artistic skills at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts under a Lee Foundation Scholarship.
In the 1960s, Kam furthered his studies in violin performance and composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Remarkably, while excelling in music, he also showcased his artwork in prominent galleries, earning recognition for both his artistic and musical achievements. His dual passions complemented each other, with his creative pursuits in one field often enriching the other.
Kam’s ability to pour his musical sensibilities into his artwork results in visually arresting pieces that echo the rhythm and harmony of his compositions. His art is a testament to his boundless creativity and his unique ability to bridge two distinct yet deeply connected disciplines.
Kam is unafraid to use deep reds and oranges and yellows to communicate a mood, or a feeling. The exuberance of the unseen dancer in this painting is expressed in these bold, exciting hues, accompanied by musical notes that follow along.
