Koeh Sia Yong (b.1938, Singapore) is one of the leading social realist artists in Singapore. One of his most iconic works, Here They Come! (1965), capturing illegal hawkers fleeing from the police, is on permanent display in National Gallery Singapore. Despite often being labelled as a social realist artist, Koeh Sia Yong in fact is also known to be “Singapore Van Gogh”, who is very good at drawing flowers, such as sunflowers and orchids.
In this artwork, it features two pots of golden yellow orchids intertwining into abundance against a light and untarnished background. Yellow is the colour of warmth and positivity. In Chinese culture, yellow orchids are believed to bring good fortune and happiness to households; whereas in western culture, yellow orchids are flowers of hope, reminding us to stay positive even in the face of adversity.
This positive yet tranquil piece of artwork is best to be put in living room or study room to enhance the positive energy at home.
