Mauro C. Martinez (Mexican-American, b. 1986) is a visual artist whose work addresses socio-political issues in America, with a style that is both impactful and provocative. Martinez explores the cultural phenomenon of memes, using their quick, crude, and satirical nature to critique society's obsession with image consumption.
Martinez’s source image leads him, dictating the visual outcome of the piece, leaving the artist to focus purely on technique and methodology. For example, Martinez’s sensitive content series needed to be based upon a blurred image, therefore an airbrush became necessary; then, as the fine and precise nature of the text overlay was more of a challenge to recreate, silk screen printing became imperative.
This is off a famous “censored” Instagram post of the kid holding a gun.
*Image background has been composited. The artwork is the actual piece. The tape fastening the print is also a render.
