Olga Marie Polunin (Singaporean, b. 1963) is of Russian-English and Hakka Chinese descent. Her paternal grand-parents, Vladimir and Violet Polunin were both respected artists of the 20th century, friends and colleagues of Diaghilev, Matisse, Picasso, Bracques.
Olga explores the many facets of women through images of the Asian feminine form. A mother of two, Olga expanded her studies to include the sacred yet playful bond between mother and child. Her positive rendition of the Madonna theme is both personal and universal.
Asmara is the first daughter of the artist and at that time, as a little girl, Asmara helped her mother “add on” some final touches and got to sign her name on the back of the canvas.
A handwritten note from the artist to her new friend accompanies the artwork, dated Jan’ 2000.
Acquired directly from the artist in 2000.
