Ryo Matsuoka, Untitled, 2019

SGD 8,000.00

Embroidery on cloth
102 x 74 x 3 cm
Condition: Good, slight discoloration on edges of work

-

I acquired the work after seeing it exhibited at Telok Ayer Arts Club, where it was draped and hung on the wall. I was immediately drawn to the vivid colors and brash, uncontrolled lines tearing through the cloth. It was both playful and joyful, but also evocative of a certain intention, like Pollock brushstrokes had been woven and densely stitched in place. I liked the tension it held. Up close, when you see the furrows and bunches of cloth gathered by the thick layers of stitching, the tactile quality really invites you in. Think rumpled bedsheets, sunlit mornings, strewn paint, but cast in a moment forever.

Ryo Matsuoka’s practice of spontaneous yet incredibly laboured mark-making with the sewing machine has a purity of heart and play. I love how he calls it “play simple”.

I am selling the work to make space for newer works, and I hope that whoever chooses this will find as much joy as I found in it.

Purchased from so-far.
