SGD 800.00

Charcoal on Paper
55 x 75 cm, 80 x 100 cm (framed)

-

Tawan (Thai) depicts five young Buddhist monks deeply-engaged in what appears to be a mobile phone. The expression of each child is one of pure fascination but yet gives little away on what is drawing their attention. The work piques the viewer’s curiosity, almost beckoning one to step into the artwork to find out what these young monks are watching.

The artwork is a tongue-in-cheek yet profound commentary on the magnetic power of technology to engage or perhaps, invade one’s daily existence. The juxtaposition of Thailand’s deeply-rooted history of Buddhism against the impending pull of modernity and technology make this work simple yet powerful.
