His earlier works were a series of decorative semi-abstract paintings of frangipani treetops. His works reflect his fascination with Asian cultures, religions and traditions. These included Balinese mythology, Hinduism, Buddhism, Asian mural paintings and Persian miniatures. He was also inspired by the gilded Art Nouveau paintings of Austrian symbolist artist Gustav Klimt.

Teng’s works are in the collections of Singtel, the Singapore Art Museum, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Neka Museum in Bali, Indonesia.
