Not much of a story really. We bought this work in 2011 in Hanoi, the artist is 85-year old Vietnamese impressionist master Van Tho. We fell in love with the bright contrasting colour palette, recognisable subject and broad textured style of his paintings. He does mostly self portraits and figures, which is why this work is so special - he has perfectly captured the effervescence of the seas on a midday afternoon.
Very sad to let this piece go, we’ve run out of space in our apartment and the restaurant environment is not exactly conducive. I have a little van Tho catalogue (only one) somewhere in our house.
