Christine Mak (Singaporean, b. 1957) created one of her finest works in this piece, showcasing her unique fusion of artistic traditions. Trained in Western painting at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (1976–1978) and in Chinese brush painting under Chao Shao-An, a master of the Lingnan style (1979–1982), Mak seamlessly blends traditional Chinese compositions with Western techniques. Her inspirations, drawn from artists like Joan Miró and Jackson Pollock, are evident in her bold yet thoughtful approach.

The brushwork radiates exuberance, celebrating the warmth of home and the joy of familial togetherness. It weaves an almost magical, mystical aura around a cosy cluster of houses, evoking a sense of intimacy and nostalgia. The simplicity of execution is striking—every stroke feels intentional, with no extraneous dot, dash, or line to distract from the overall harmony.

Mak’s restrained colour palette adds depth and balance to the work, enhancing its quiet elegance and emotional resonance. This painting stands as a testament to her ability to merge traditional forms with modern sensibilities, creating art that is both timeless and deeply personal.
