Coplu (Turkish, b. 1958) is a contemporary artist celebrated for his colourful, whimsical style that blends humour with themes of love, peace, and human connection. Born in Uşak, Turkey, he began as a cartoonist during his university years, using satire to comment on political and social issues of the time. His first solo exhibition was held in Istanbul in 1984, and by 1989 he gained international recognition, exhibiting widely across Europe, North America, and Asia. Now based between Vancouver, Canada and Antalya, Turkey, Coplu has developed a distinctive visual language of playful, sentimental figures that convey optimism and universal emotions, earning him a broad international following.
This appeals to Chinese buyers because of the red lanterns, which are considered auspicious in Chinese culture. The number of lanterns is eight, an especially lucky number as it sounds like prosperity and wealth.
