Han Sai Por (Singaporean, b. 1943) is a prominent sculptor renowned for her exploration of nature, environment, and human relationships through abstract and organic forms. A graduate of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and the East Ham College of Art in London, she is one of Asia's leading contemporary sculptors. Han's deep respect for natural landscapes and environmental themes drives her artistic practice, often reflecting the delicate balance between nature and urbanisation.
Her sculptures are characterised by their fluid, organic shapes and textured surfaces, created using materials such as marble, granite, and wood. Many of her works examine themes of growth, transformation, and the resilience of life, evoking elements like seeds, leaves, and the flow of water. Pieces such as "Seeds" (1995) and "Growth" (1985) demonstrate her profound ability to capture the vitality of nature in monumental yet graceful forms. Her minimalist approach, combined with a focus on form and texture, creates a sense of timeless simplicity. Her typical art style is clearly demonstrated in this piece, which evokes a sense of peace and transformation through its white shade and entrancing design.
Han’s influence extends beyond her artistic practice. She is the founding president of the Sculpture Society (Singapore) and has been a mentor to many younger artists. Her contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious Cultural Medallion for Visual Arts (1995). Through her powerful, contemplative works, Han continues to challenge viewers to reflect on the fragility of ecosystems and the human impact on the environment, making her one of the most respected voices in contemporary Southeast Asian art.
