Lim Kang Kee (Singaporean, b. 1943) demonstrated a keen interest in art from a young age. Encouraged by his cousin, he enrolled at the now-defunct Singapore Academy of Art, where he studied under the renowned artist Sun Yee (Chinese, 1919-2010). He also trained separately with pioneer artist Liu Kang (Singaporean, 1911-2004) . Both mentors, trained in Western painting, had a lasting influence on Lim’s artistic development.
Working primarily in watercolour and oil, Lim’s practice spans still life, landscapes, street scenes, and the occasional figure. His works reflect a sensitivity to composition, detail, and technique, echoing the influence of his teachers.
Lim later became a dedicated art educator, teaching privately at his studio and community centres. In 1995, he was awarded the People’s Association Long Service Award for 25 years of commitment to nurturing students as a Continuing Education Activity Instructor. Beyond education, Lim has actively contributed to Singapore’s art scene, regularly participating in group exhibitions and staging several solo shows, including his fifth solo exhibition in 2011 at Musa Abode Art Gallery.
A life member of key art organisations such as the Society of Chinese Artists, the Singapore Art Society, and the Singapore Watercolour Society, Lim continues to practise and share his rich knowledge and experience with the next generation of artists.
