The artwork is a chromolithograph after John Everett Millais' (1829-1896) painting 'Cherry Ripe' (1879), which was used as an advertisement for Pears Soap. Millais’ work often depicted young children set against objects emblematic of life and death. At the time (late-1800s), the commercial use of Millais’ work led to widespread debate about the relationship between art and advertising.
