Hua Chai Yong

Hua Chai Yong (1943–2018) was a Singaporean artist known for his expressive flat-brush technique. He studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1963 to 1964 and participated in group exhibitions across Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong. In 1979, he received the Special Award at the National Day Art Exhibition, presented by the Ministry of Culture. He went on to win the UOB Painting of the Year Competition in 1983, 1986 and 1992. Hua’s use of the flat brush gave his compositions angular forms and a sense of movement. His sketchy, expressive strokes conveyed the emotional character of his subjects, even in moments of stillness. In 2010, he held a solo exhibition, Good Morning, Yesterday, at ION Art Gallery.
