Keiko Moriuchi

Keiko Moriuchi 森内敬子 (born 1943) is a Japanese artist and the final member to join the Gutai Art Association. She was the only member invited to join by its founder, Jiro Yoshihara. Moriuchi creates deeply textured paintings that bring the physical force of Gutai’s artistic gestures into dialogue with spiritual ideas. Building up layers of Liquitex paint, she gives her canvases an almost sculptural surface before applying gold leaf. Her compositions evoke sacred geometry and mythological symbols, while their layered surfaces make the act of painting visible. For Moriuchi, gold is more than a decorative material: she believes it has healing and purifying properties and can activate divine energy points of the heart and mind. Across her practice, tactile materials and deliberate gestures become ways to explore the relationship between physical experience and the unseen.
