Lai Foong Moi (Singaporean, 1931–1994) was a pioneering female artist in the Singapore art scene, known for her expressive landscapes, portraits, and depictions of everyday life. Born in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, she studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts before receiving a French government scholarship to further her studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Her time in France exposed her to European modernist approaches, particularly Post-Impressionism, which influenced her use of colour, brushwork, and composition.
Returning to Singapore in 1958, Lai joined the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts as an educator, where she nurtured several generations of artists. Her paintings often portray Nanyang scenes, rural landscapes, and figures from everyday life, combining careful observation with a sensitive treatment of light, colour, and atmosphere. Through her distinctive fusion of Western modernist influences and Southeast Asian subjects, Lai became an important figure in the development of Singapore’s modern art history.
