Mak Kum Siew

Mak Kum Siew (Singaporean, b. 1940) is best known for his abstract and minimalistic paintings, developed over decades between Singapore, London, and the UK countryside. He studied under pioneer artists Chen Wen Hsi and Cheong Soo Pieng at Chinese High School, before departing Singapore in 1961 to pursue his artistic ambitions in London, where he studied at St Martin's School of Art and later the Royal College of Art.

Mak has exhibited widely across Singapore, Hong Kong, and the UK, including solo exhibitions at Arnolfini Bristol, the National Library Singapore, and the Royal College of Art, alongside group exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts London and the Royal Academy of Arts. In 1979, he was awarded the Grand Prize at the 11th International Biennial of Prints in Tokyo.

His works are held in prestigious public collections including the Arts Council UK, the National Collection of Singapore, and the Museum of Modern Art, Hyogo.
