Ng Yat Chuan (Singaporean, b.1936) is a painter and an important figure in Singapore’s modern art movement, recognised for his contributions to abstraction during the 1960s and 1970s. He trained at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1953 to 1956, studying under prominent artists including Georgette Chen, Lim Yew Kuan, Chen Wen Hsi, and Shi Xiang Tuo. He later pursued further studies in France at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and the University of Paris (Sorbonne), where he continued to develop his artistic practice and exhibited in French salon exhibitions.
Ng was a founding member and the first President of the Modern Art Society Singapore, established in 1964, alongside artists including Ho Ho Ying, Tay Chee Toh, Wee Beng Chong, and Tan Yee Hong. His practice is characterised by an exploration of colour, form, and abstraction, combining Western modernist influences with his own interpretations of visual experience. Through his involvement in Singapore’s early modern art scene, Ng contributed to the development and recognition of abstraction as an important direction within the country’s post-war artistic landscape.
