Qwek Wee Chew (Singaporean, 1934–2019) was a painter associated with Singapore’s modern art movement, known for his refined still life compositions that combined modernist abstraction with the sensibilities of Chinese ink painting. Trained at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, he exhibited widely as a member of the Singapore Art Society, presenting works in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Penang. His paintings often transformed everyday subjects such as flowers, ceramics, and household objects into carefully balanced compositions through subtle colour fields and delicate linear details.
Qwek maintained a lifelong interest in still life, using the genre as a means to explore form, space, and visual harmony. His works reveal an appreciation for both Western modernist approaches and Chinese artistic traditions, characterised by quiet precision, translucency, and a restrained sense of composition. Beyond his artistic practice, Qwek also served as caretaker of the Yueh Hai Ching Temple, a role that reflected his connection to cultural heritage and contributed to the contemplative quality found in his works.
