Tan Peng (Singaporean, b.unknown) is a contemporary artist known for his figurative drawings and paintings that explore themes of identity, desire, vulnerability and social marginalisation. Working primarily with pastel and drawing, he developed a distinctive visual language centred on the human body, using expressive lines and intimate compositions to examine personal and emotional experiences. His practice often engages with questions of visibility and representation, particularly within the context of Singapore’s social and cultural landscape.
In 1993, Tan gained wider recognition through his exhibition Flowing Forest, Burning Hearts at The Substation, where he publicly addressed his identity as a gay artist and presented works exploring themes including prejudice, relationships, and the experiences of the LGBTQ+ community. His contributions remain significant within the history of Singaporean contemporary art for expanding conversations around identity, sexuality, and representation.
