Zhuang Hong Yi (also written Zhuang Hongyi; b. 1962) is a Chinese artist based in Switzerland. He is known for his “flower bed” paintings, made from painted rice paper folded and shaped into hundreds of small floral forms. Their layered surfaces give the works a tactile, three-dimensional quality, while shifts in colour become apparent as viewers move from one side of a painting to the other.
Traditional Chinese rice paper is central to Zhuang’s practice. Through its careful handling, he explores colour, nature and form while drawing on Chinese aesthetics. His attention to technique and uniformity reflects his training at the Sichuan College of Fine Art. In his floral works, individually formed paper elements combine to create a larger composition, bringing meticulous construction together with an experience of colour that changes with the viewer’s position.
