A.D. Pirous (Indonesian, 1932-2024) was a pioneering modern Indonesian painter, graphic designer, and educator known for integrating Islamic calligraphy, Qur’anic verses, and Acehnese motifs into contemporary abstract art. He studied at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and later in the U.S., where exposure to Western modernism influenced his approach. Pirous is often credited with introducing Islamic themes into Indonesian modern art in the 1970s, establishing a visual language that bridges tradition and modernity. He also taught at ITB, shaping generations of Indonesian artists and designers.
