Achmad Sopandi Hasan (Indonesian, b. 1958) is an artist, educator, and innovator known for his pioneering use of natural pigments. He studied fine art at STSRI "ASRI" Yogyakarta and later earned a Master’s and Doctorate in Art Education from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Malaysia. Since the 1970s, he has exhibited widely in Indonesia and abroad, with his practice strongly influenced by indigenous communities and natural environments. Achmad is recognised for inventing Hematisol, a nanostructured hematite-based pigment that received a patent and ISO certification. He has taught at Universitas Negeri Jakarta since 1982 and held teaching positions in Malaysia, while also serving as an advisor to UNESCO’s ISEND, the World Batik Council, and the World Craft Council.
