We are admirers of Andre Barrioquinto’s works and have been drawn to his portraits of “people who had affected, inspired or bored him”. The portraits ranged from “moody realism” to “visual satires and instances of terrifying beauty” painted during his “cubistic and blue period”.
These paintings : “Playing the Angel” and “Suffer Well” are about different kinds of love hiding behind deceiving masks.
We collected these paintings as a pair as we felt they related directly to each other, even though Andres may not have meant them to be a pair.

Andres Barrioquinto (Filipino, b. 1975) is a contemporary artist known for his striking and surreal portraits. His works often feature detailed figures surrounded by intricate patterns, lush flora, and symbolic imagery, blending elements of Baroque, realism, and Japanese woodcut aesthetics. His unique style sets his portraits apart, giving them a dreamlike yet mysterious quality.
Barrioquinto’s art explores themes of identity, duality, and emotion, often portraying subjects with a sense of stillness contrasted by dynamic, almost chaotic backgrounds. His meticulous attention to detail and rich, layered compositions create visually captivating pieces that draw the viewer into his imagined worlds.
With exhibitions both in the Philippines and internationally, Barrioquinto has established himself as a leading figure in contemporary Philippine art. His works are widely collected and celebrated for their distinct fusion of beauty and darkness, reflecting a deep understanding of both classical and modern influences.
Acquired at Utterly Art’s past exhibition called Andres Barrioquinto Personages, 2006.
