Anthony Chua Say Hua (Singaporean, b. 1966) is a distinguished artist known for his innovative fusion of traditional Chinese ink techniques with modern artistic expressions. His work explores the dynamic tension between heritage and contemporary urbanisation, reflecting Singapore’s evolving cityscape.
Chua graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts with a Diploma in Fine Arts in 1992, before furthering his studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1994. In 1997, he earned a Master’s in Fine Art from the University of London. His culturally diverse academic background has enabled him to develop a distinctive style that bridges Eastern traditions and Western modernist aesthetics.
Chua has held over 12 solo exhibitions and participated in more than 15 group exhibitions. His notable series, including Nudes in Landscape from the late 1990s, demonstrates his ability to merge abstract compositions with contemporary subject matter. Through his work, he reinterprets Chinese ink painting for the modern era, cementing his status as a leading figure in Singapore’s art scene.
Deeply influenced by Singapore’s rapid modernisation, Chua’s work captures transient urban spaces through a masterful use of monochromatic palettes, dynamic brushwork, and abstracted architectural forms. While he primarily works with Chinese ink, he continuously pushes the boundaries of traditional media, incorporating unconventional tools such as feather brushes to achieve unique visual effects.
