Anthony Poon (Singaporean, 1945-2006) is an esteemed artist known for his distinct contemporary style, often blending traditional and modern elements in his work. His creative journey began with a strong educational foundation in the arts. He graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), a key institution in Singapore’s arts scene, which helped shape his approach to visual expression.

Poon’s work spans various mediums, including painting, sculpture, and installations, and he is particularly noted for his mastery in capturing the essence of Singapore's multicultural identity. His art often explores themes such as identity, history, and cultural transformation. Through his work, Poon reflects on the complex nature of contemporary life in Singapore, focusing on the interactions between traditional values and modern influences. This piece’s swirling shape suggests fluidity and dynamism, possibly reflecting the constant change and evolution in both Poon’s personal journey and Singapore’s own cultural and societal transformations. The use of red is particularly significant, as it often symbolises vitality, energy, passion, and power in many cultures, including Singapore’s own identity as a vibrant, dynamic nation.

His pieces have been featured in solo and group exhibitions, both locally and internationally, establishing him as a key figure in the art world. Poon’s style is deeply informed by his Singaporean heritage, which is evident in his use of symbolism and cultural motifs. His exploration of themes such as cultural integration, social change, and personal identity has made his art relevant and reflective of the ongoing transformations within Singapore.
