The art of Arie Smit (Dutch, 1916-2016) is full of joy and serenity. His colourful world painted with brush-strokes which appear to move on the surface, invites the viewer to closer inspection and deeper contemplation. After studying at the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam, he went to Jakarta to work as a lithographer in the topography service of the Dutch colonial army. Eventually Smit finally decided to move to Bali to fulfill his desire of becoming a full-time artist. Never sated with discovering and exploring the beauty of the island, Smit relocated himself in more than twenty different places within thirty years on the island.

The stippled approach Smit takes to painting creates the texture in the work that reflects light varyingly, adding to the vibrancy of the painting.

Acquired from Borobudur Fine Art Auction in 2008.
