Atjeng (Indonesian, b. 1954) is a painter whose works often explore themes of Indonesian culture, ceremony and rural tradition. He typically depicts Balinese or Javanese village scenes, rendered in vibrant colours and visible brushstrokes. The impressionistic style gives it an almost atmospheric quality. His figures are stylised rather than anatomically precise, often shown in ritual processions, temple gatherings or scenes of daily communal life.
We were on holiday in Bali when we were brought to the artists’ enclave of Ubud. There, in an art collective of sorts, we chanced upon this painting. We were immediately attracted by the thick peaks created by the brush strokes. This image of a Balinese procession is iconic, a reflection of the celebratory culture of the people.
