Awang Damit Ahmad (Malaysian, b.1956) is known for his expressive abstract paintings that combine layered textures, gestural marks, and earthy tones. Drawing from memories of his upbringing in Sabah, his works often explore themes of landscape, labour, identity, and emotional experience through dynamic, heavily worked surfaces. His compositions balance spontaneity with structure, building dense visual fields that suggest both natural environments and inner psychological states.
A graduate of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Awang later pursued further studies in the United States, where exposure to Abstract Expressionism further shaped his visual language. Over the course of his career, he has developed a distinctive approach to abstraction that transforms personal memory and cultural experience into richly textured, atmospheric compositions, establishing him as a key figure in Malaysian contemporary art.
Produced during the late 1980s and early 1990s, Awang Damit Ahmad’s Essence of Culture (E.O.C.) series reflects memories of his upbringing in Sabah and his observations of rural life, labour, and landscape. Rather than depicting these scenes directly, the artist transforms them into expressive abstract compositions filled with layered textures, gestural marks, and earthy tones, creating works that balance personal memory with emotional intensity.
Acquired from Galeri Citra Kuala Lumpur in 1989.
