Ayako Rokkaku (Japanese, b.1982) is a contemporary artist known for her vibrant, expressive paintings featuring fantastical figures and imaginary landscapes. Born in Chiba, Japan, Rokkaku is largely self-taught and developed her distinctive technique through an instinctive, physical approach to painting. Rather than using brushes or preliminary drawings, she applies acrylic paint directly onto the canvas with her bare hands and fingertips, allowing forms and compositions to emerge spontaneously.

Her visual language draws from Japanese kawaii culture and the uninhibited imagination of childhood, often featuring her recognisable large-eyed figures within colourful, dreamlike environments. Rokkaku's practice extends beyond painting into sculpture, ceramics, bronze, glass, and textiles, while her process also incorporates live painting performances. Since winning the Scout Prize at the GEISAI art fair in 2006, she has exhibited internationally, with solo exhibitions at institutions including the Long Museum in Shanghai, CCA Andratx, and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid.
