Bruno Tanquerel (French, b. unknown) is a contemporary artist who lives and works in Bangkok after earlier periods in places such as Pittsburgh, Hanoi and Pondicherry. He trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Normandy, France, and has exhibited widely with more than twenty solo shows and over forty group exhibitions around the world. Tanquerel is known for his wide-ranging practice that moves between painting, sculpture and mixed media, and for his reluctance to accept formal limitations in his art.

Tanquerel’s work often blends abstraction and figuration, transforming everyday forms into dramatic and expressive compositions. He has shown series of portraits and other works in galleries in Bangkok, Paris and Southeast Asia, as well as pieces made with unconventional materials and techniques. In some exhibitions he has explored themes such as human relationships and energy within portraits, while elsewhere his work reflects playfulness alongside deeper emotional and philosophical ideas.

I met Bruno personally when I visited the Art Apart Fair in 2015. I was drawn to his charm and his artwork. He had designed and produced the large Buddha sculpture in Buddha Bar Paris, and was then asked to do the same for the Buddha Bars in Beirut, NYC, Cairo and Rio de Janeiro. I loved the peace and tranquility in this piece. Bruno delivered this piece personally to my home and had it stretched on a new frame for me.
