Chang Fee Ming (Malaysian, b. 1959) is an artist widely regarded as one of Southeast Asia’s leading contemporary watercolourists. Largely self-taught, he began his career in the early 1980s, developing a distinctive practice centred on the people, landscapes and cultural traditions of the region. His early exposure to social realist painters and his extensive travels across Asia shaped a deeply observational approach to painting.
Chang’s works are recognised for their intricate handling of light, texture and colour, often depicting rural communities, batik textiles, marketplaces and scenes of everyday life across Southeast Asia. Through watercolour, he captures both the atmosphere and tactile richness of his subjects, balancing technical precision with a strong sense of place and human connection. Over the decades, he has exhibited internationally and his works are held in major collections including the Singapore Art Museum, National Gallery Singapore and Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery.
