Chen Jia Ling (Chinese, b. 1937) is a painter and ceramic artist, born in 1937 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. A graduate of the China Academy of Art, where he studied under masters Pan Tianshou and Lu Yanshao, Chen became one of the leading figures in modern Chinese ink painting. His work bridges classical brush traditions with bold experimentation in colour, composition, and medium, blending elements of landscape, figure, and flower-bird painting into a fluid, expressive style.

Over his decades-long career, Chen has expanded his practice to include ceramics, silk tapestry, and design, reflecting a deep dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art. His iconic lotus series and large-scale landscapes—such as the West Lake painting for the 2016 G20 Summit—embody both personal emotion and cultural memory. Widely exhibited in China and abroad, Chen continues to be celebrated as a pioneer of the “new ink” movement, redefining the language of Chinese art for the modern era.
