Chen Shi Jin (Singaporean, b.1959) is a Chinese ink painter and educator whose practice focuses on landscapes and scenes of Southeast Asian life. A graduate of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, he was the first Singaporean to pursue further studies at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Drawing extensively from life during his travels across Southeast Asia and China, Chen combines traditional Chinese brushwork with his observations of tropical landscapes, local cultures, and everyday life.
Chen taught Chinese painting at NAFA for 21 years and has played an important role in the development of Chinese ink painting in Singapore. His work is recognised for its expressive use of ink, colour, and composition, particularly in his depictions of the tropical environment. He received the ASEAN Study Tour Prize in 1985 and the UOB Painting of the Year Award in 1996 for Root.
