Damien Hirst (British, b.1965) is one of the most influential and controversial figures in contemporary art, rising to prominence as a leading member of the Young British Artists (YBAs) in the 1990s. Working across sculpture, installation, painting, and printmaking, his practice examines themes of life, death, science, medicine, and belief. Hirst is best known for his formaldehyde-preserved animals, pharmaceutical installations, spot paintings, spin paintings, and diamond-encrusted sculptures, all of which challenge conventional ideas about mortality, value, and the role of art.
A graduate of Goldsmiths, University of London, Hirst first gained international attention after organising the landmark Freeze exhibition in 1988, which helped define a new generation of British contemporary art. Awarded the Turner Prize in 1995, he has remained one of the world's most commercially successful living artists, continually pushing the boundaries between conceptual art, spectacle, and the art market. His works are held in major museum collections worldwide and continue to provoke debate over authorship, originality, and the nature of contemporary art.
