Dang Xuan Hoa (Vietnamese, b.1959) is a leading figure in contemporary Vietnamese art and a founding member of the influential “Gang of Five,” a group of artists who helped redefine Vietnamese painting during the post-Đổi Mới period. Trained at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, he developed a distinctive visual language that blends elements of expressionism and abstraction with subjects rooted in Vietnamese culture, memory, and everyday life. His works are characterised by bold colour, simplified forms, and emotionally charged compositions that prioritise inner feeling over direct representation.
Throughout his career, Hoa has explored recurring motifs of the human figure and familiar objects, using them as vehicles for reflection on identity, experience, and the passage of time. While his paintings have evolved from more recognisable imagery towards greater abstraction, they remain grounded in personal observation and cultural tradition. Widely exhibited internationally, his works are held in major collections including the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, the Singapore Art Museum, and the National Museum of Malaysia.
