David Gerstein (Israeli, b.1944) is a painter, sculptor, and printmaker whose practice combines figurative imagery with the visual language of Pop Art. Born in Jerusalem, he studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art, the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the Art Students League in New York, and Saint Martin’s School of Art in London.
Gerstein is particularly recognised for his vibrant depictions of everyday life, including people, bicycles, animals, nature, and urban scenes. From the late 1970s, he expanded painting into three-dimensional forms, eventually developing his distinctive multi-layered, laser-cut steel wall sculptures in the 1990s. Painted in vivid colours, these works blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture and have become a defining feature of his practice.
His works have been exhibited internationally and are held in museums and public spaces worldwide. He has also created numerous large-scale public sculptures, including Momentum in Singapore.
