Erizal As (Indonesian, b. 1979) is a contemporary Indonesian painter known for his expressive works that explore identity, leadership and the complexities of human character. He studied at the Institut Seni Indonesia in Yogyakarta, where he developed a practice rooted in both portraiture and abstraction. Over time, he has become a recognised figure in Indonesian contemporary art, regularly exhibiting across the region.
Erizal’s works often draw from the symbolic role of the portrait, using it as a way to examine power, influence and the contrast between outward appearance and inner reality. Influenced by the presence and authority of orchestral conductors, his compositions carry a sense of movement and intensity, balancing gestural energy with structured form. In recent years, his practice has also expanded into more abstract and landscape-based works, reflecting personal experiences and a deeper connection to place.
Acquired from Gajah Gallery in 2021.
