Fadjar Sidik (Indonesian, 1930–2004) was a pioneering figure in Indonesian modern art, best known for his development of abstract painting through his exploration of form, colour, and spatial relationships. Born in Surabaya, he initially worked with figurative and social realist approaches before moving towards abstraction in the 1960s. His mature practice, particularly the Dinamika Keruangan (Dynamic of Space) series, is characterised by simplified geometric and biomorphic forms arranged in rhythmic compositions that evoke movement, nature, and the changing environment.

Influenced by his experiences in Bali and Indonesia’s visual traditions, Sidik incorporated elements reminiscent of batik patterns, textile designs, and Islamic geometry into his abstract compositions. Through his role as an educator at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI) in Yogyakarta, he also contributed significantly to the development of modern Indonesian painting. Today, he is recognised as one of Indonesia’s important modernist artists, with his works continuing to highlight the connection between abstraction, cultural identity, and visual rhythm.
