Faizal Yunus (Malaysian, b.1989) is a contemporary artist working across painting, printmaking, and installation. A graduate of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), where he specialised in printmaking, he is known for expanding traditional printmaking processes into experimental and mixed-media forms. His works often draw inspiration from nature, memory, and everyday surroundings, translating these observations into dynamic abstract compositions marked by layered textures, repetition, and expressive material exploration.
Originally from Pahang and now based in Kuala Lumpur, Faizal has developed a practice that balances spontaneity with process-driven experimentation. His paintings frequently investigate environmental concerns, urbanisation, and the relationship between the natural and built worlds, while incorporating unconventional materials and industrial techniques. Recognised as the recipient of the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award in 2019, he has established himself as an important voice among a new generation of Malaysian contemporary artists.
In this work, Faizal Yunus draws upon the airbrush stencil techniques he once employed in an automobile paint shop, transforming an industrial process into a deeply personal visual language. The glossy metallic surfaces and illusion of crumpled aluminium evoke both the precision of machine-made materials and the emotional complexities of lived experience. Created during a period of personal change, the work reflects themes of transformation, adaptation, and resilience, using fractured yet ordered forms as metaphors for the unseen structures that shape daily life and the responsibilities that accompany new beginnings.
