Gopal Samantray (Indian, b. 1976) studied at the B.K. College of Art, where he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2002 and Master of Fine Arts in 2004. He currently lives and works in New Delhi and has exhibited widely across India. His practice focuses on ecological concerns and the changing relationship between humans, animals, and the environments they occupy.
Samantray is known for paintings that place wildlife in altered, urban, or industrial settings, creating scenes that highlight habitat loss, deforestation, and the displacement of animals. His imagery often features wounded trees, solitary animals, and surreal contrasts between nature and human-built spaces. Through these compositions, he expresses a strong environmental conscience, aiming to evoke empathy and reflection on ecological destruction. His work encourages viewers to confront the consequences of modern development and to reconsider their own relationship with the natural world.
