Hanafi (Indonesia, b. 1960) is an Indonesian contemporary artist celebrated for his lyrical abstractionist paintings that evoke emotion and invite contemplation. Trained at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI) from 1976 to 1979, he developed a distinctive visual language that draws on both traditional artistic sensibilities and modern abstraction.
A finalist in the prestigious Philip Morris Indonesia Art Awards in 1997, Hanafi has exhibited extensively across Indonesia and internationally, with more than a hundred exhibitions to his name. His solo exhibitions include presentations at the National Gallery of Indonesia in Jakarta, while his long-standing collaboration with Komaneka Fine Art Gallery in Ubud has continued since 2001. Expanding beyond painting, Hanafi's multidisciplinary practice encompasses mixed media and collaborations with writers, dancers, and architects. His works are characterised by fluid, gestural compositions that unfold as poetic inner landscapes, where moments of stillness coexist with a restrained yet dynamic expressive force.
