Hayashi Shōtarō (Japanese, b. 1947) is a contemporary ceramicist known for his sculptural approach to form and texture. Born in Kyoto, Hayashi studied at the Kyoto City University of Arts and trained under leading figures in Japanese ceramics. While rooted in traditional techniques, his work departs from utilitarian function, focusing instead on abstract forms and material expression.
Hayashi’s ceramics are often asymmetrical and dynamic, pushing the boundaries of clay as a medium. He is particularly known for his experimentation with surface texture—ranging from rough, jagged finishes to smooth, metallic glazes. Drawing inspiration from natural phenomena, architecture, and Japanese aesthetics, his works evoke a sense of movement and quiet strength.
His pieces have been exhibited internationally and are held in public and private collections in Japan and abroad. Hayashi continues to explore the sculptural potential of ceramics, creating works that challenge conventional notions of pottery and art.
