Hazul Bakar (Malaysian, b. 1989) is a contemporary artist specialising in printmaking, particularly silkscreen and woodcut techniques. He graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art, majoring in Printmaking, from ASWARA (National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage) in Kuala Lumpur. Since the early 2010s, he has participated in numerous exhibitions in Malaysia and abroad, including shows in Belgium and the United States.
Working across printmaking, carving and mixed media, Hazul’s practice often draws from local popular culture, social commentary and symbolic imagery. His works frequently employ anthropomorphic figures and layered visual narratives to reflect on issues surrounding society, oppression and contemporary Malaysian life. Through a combination of traditional printmaking methods and contemporary subject matter, his practice bridges conventional techniques with present-day themes.
