Heesoo Kim (South Korean, b. 1984) is a contemporary painter based in Seoul. He graduated from Konkuk University with a BFA in Advertising and Design, and began his professional career in photography and video. At the age of 30, Kim transitioned to painting, seeking a medium that allowed for deeper introspection and personal expression.
Kim’s work centers on the emotional nuances of everyday life, often depicting anonymous figures in moments of quiet reflection. His paintings are characterised by bold lines, flattened perspectives, and earthy tones, creating a sense of stillness and melancholy. The recurring theme of “Normal Life” in his exhibitions underscores his focus on the universal aspects of human experience.
Figurative paintings are a powerful testament to an artist's ability to convey their vision and connect with audiences. Korean artist Heesoo Kim excels in this realm, creating works that are instantly recognisable and profoundly evocative.
Heesoo captures the emotions he observes in people, translating them onto his characters in a way that makes their expressions neutral. This unique approach invites viewers to project their own feelings onto each piece. For instance, in this painting, if you’re missing someone, you might feel the ache of longing; if you’re in love, the world may seem to revolve around those two lovers depicted.
His work accommodates the myriad emotions that viewers bring, allowing each person to experience something entirely on their own. What feelings arise for you when you see his art? It’s an invitation to write your own story.
Heesoo Kim is currently represented by Unit London.
